Valley Stream, New York--(Newsfile Corp. - April 4, 2023) - Simon Kaye, co-founder, and CEO of New York-based Freight Architect and NVOCC Jaguar Freight, has come up with 31 fundamental statements that make up the "Jaguar Way", which outlines how the company can live up to its core values - Supportive, Passionate, Innovative, Driven, and Responsible.
While virtually all companies have come up with core values and mission and vision statements, sometimes these end up as just words on a piece of paper or a poster on the office's wall. Kaye says that the 31 fundamentals are the answer to how Jaguar and its employees can bring its five core values to life.
The idea for the fundamentals sprung from a CEO peer group Kaye is part of. One of the guest speakers was the CEO of a consultancy that specializes in improving corporate culture, and the speech resonated well with him.
"Something he said really resonated with me. He said that price isn't your differentiator, because there's always someone who's going to be cheaper. Your product isn't your differentiator either, because someone is always going to copy you or catch up with what you're doing. Your people are your differentiator, and you need to invest and focus on your people. And I wholeheartedly agree, as culture is really important at Jaguar, and our people do differentiate us."
Kaye and the rest of Jaguar's management team worked with the consultancy to come up with the 31 fundamentals. At the start of each week, Kaye discusses one fundamental in a company-wide email, which is also accessible via Jaguar's employee app. Once Kaye has finished discussing all of the fundamentals over the span of 31 weeks, the other members of the management team will have their turn discussing them. And, when the management team has finished, anyone in the company is welcome to write the memo about the fundamental of the week.
"It's inclusive, it's repetitive, and we are constantly reinforcing it. It enhances and grows employee engagement. Having engaged employees is good for the company's bottom line, and there's a direct correlation between culture, employee engagement, and the success of the business."
Kaye highlighted three fundamentals, each relating to three pillars of the company - service, staff, and customers.
Fundamental 1, which relates to service, is "deliver legendary service". Kaye says: "We're in the service industry, so we should be delivering outstanding service. We don't have a product that people can touch and feel. Our goal is for the customer to find every experience with us as seamless, helpful, and beneficial to what they're trying to achieve and for us to regularly WOW them in ways they don't expect."
Fundamental 3, which relates to the staff, is "own your work-life balance". According to Kaye, employees must be able to maintain boundaries to protect their work-life balance, and for the company to respect these boundaries. This is especially important since Jaguar Freight's entire workforce is remote. Kaye says that the company has not lost a single employee in the past seven years, which is a testament to it being able to live up to this fundamental.
Fundamental 19, which relates to customers, is "walk in your customer's shoes". This involves understanding the customer and making sure to look at things from their perspective, which is extremely important in meeting their needs.
"These fundamentals are things that the company has already been doing for a long time, but now, we are codifying them as a guide to further improvement. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We are not expecting things to change overnight. Rather, we want to make gradual improvements to the way things currently are, as I believe that we've already been doing a lot of things right, as we've been in the business for 30 years."
Kaye says the 31 fundamentals are not a closely guarded secret recipe. The company also shares them with its clients and vendors, which helps Jaguar and its people be accountable.
"We want our clients and vendors to hold us to these standards, so we're putting it in writing. If we ever don't meet their expectations, they can point out to us how we fell short and we will put in the effort to correct it. I also want them to look at the Jaguar Way and think that we are the sort of company that they want to do business with. And, hopefully, we can also inspire them to adopt these fundamentals in their own businesses."
Amid much talk about The Great Resignation and quiet quitting, Jaguar Freight's culture remains its strong point. Kaye says that having a robust, welcoming, and inclusive company culture is critical to the strength, and resilience of the business.
"If you're swapping people out on a regular basis, or your people are not engaged with how the company is being run, then you will not be able to do the best job possible for your clients. I believe one leads to the other like a symbiotic relationship. A company with a great culture attracts good people. If the people are focused, hardworking, and committed, the customers are happy and the business is bound to do well."
