Los Angeles, California--(Newsfile Corp. - August 14, 2023) - When the British playwright Oscar Wilde famously quipped, "The curves of your lips rewrite history", he touched on an unspoken truth of human aesthetics. Despite the historical focus being on the eyes as the 'windows to the soul', our lips are, whether we like it or not, keystones in our perceptions of beauty.

Wilde was championing something that had previously been an afterthought, until the social media era thrust the appearance of women's lips into the spotlight. Some found inventive ways of adding volume, but for those who were unwilling to spend hours on end pouting in front of their selfie-sticks, cosmetic surgery was the primary option.

Traditionally, when people think of beautifying lips, they think of adding volume through the injection of fillers. However, a recent study highlights how women have been getting 'filler fatigue', and are moving away from this procedure. Filler can lead to the more exaggerated, pillowy look that commonly seems to appear in Reality TV shows.

Cosmetic surgery's over-reliance on fillers when it comes to lips, coupled with the relative lack of significance given to this body-part compared to the usual suspects, has contributed to a degree of procedural naivety. In turn, it is perhaps unsurprising that revision surgeries have been rapidly rising in recent years.

Between 2020 and 2021, the rate of people asking for their cosmetic surgeries to be revised soared by 70%. When lip surgeries are carried out ineffectively, it can lead to a variety of deformities and scarring.

It is the lack of information, poor advice and often faulty procedures which continue to motivate Dr Randal Haworth (dubbed the 'Lip King'). He has made a variety of high-profile TV appearances on shows such as The Swan, and is considered by many to be a pioneer in the field of lip surgery.

Realizing the dissatisfaction that eventually arose as a result of simply using fillers for lip enhancement, Dr Haworth spearheaded a new form of cosmetic surgery: lip lifts. Whether it be an upper lip lift, corner lip lift or lower lip lift, these procedures all focus on reshaping, rather than merely adding volume. "Breast procedures are analogous to lip procedures in the sense that augmenting a breast, by adding volume in the form of an implant, is different to a breast lift," states Dr. Haworth.

In the 90s, when Dr Haworth first began exploring and inventing new forms of lip lifts, he was criticized for venturing outside of the standard, cosmetic surgeon's box. Many surgeons felt that scarring and nasal pull-down were obstacles that prevented widespread adoption of lip lifts in general, but by applying modern principles of plastic surgery to a new form of lip lift (OOS upper lip lift), Dr Haworth relegated these problems and critics to the past.

Dr Haworth's approach to facial cosmetic surgery is based on the notion of the 'aesthetic triangle'. This revolves around the eyes and the lips, and is underpinned by the idea that most plastic surgery is ultimately geared towards enhancing the appearance of these features. Through his procedures, Dr Haworth aims to create facial harmony, and the lips are an integral element to the formula. This methodology is rooted in science, with studies highlighting how infants' eyes are drawn above all else to the eyes and mouth.

"They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, and if that's the case, then the mouth is undoubtedly the door. Through focussing on this aesthetic triangle of the eyes and lips, patients are far happier with the results they get. For instance, I've done lip lifts on patients and then asked them what they notice first. Interestingly, rather than the lips, they pick up on the fact that their eyes now pop," underlines Dr Haworth.

Dr Haworth's role can be likened to that of a conductor, who has to maintain a birds-eye-view of the arrangement of various instruments and players, in order to ensure that the end-result is as beautiful as it can be. If just one instrument is out of tune, then this is enough to throw the entire composition out of sync.

Central to Dr Haworth's approach is an artistic drive to avoid the over-accentuated cosmetic surgery that has become popular with social media influencers. 79% of surgeons underline how, since the pandemic, they have seen more and more patients asking for procedures specifically designed for video calls or social media.

As Dr Haworth outlines, "Especially in this era where we are seeing an increasing number of patients seeking revision surgeries, it is so important to me to produce as natural a result as is possible. This will increase the likelihood of long-term patient satisfaction - which is always the main objective."

This feels particularly poignant, given the report that patients' second biggest concern when heading into cosmic surgery is being saddled with an 'unnatural result'. For over twenty years, Dr Haworth has been placing this at the heart of his practice in Beverly Hills. Once again, as was the case with his pioneering work in the field of lip surgery, it seems the rest of the cosmetic community is eventually starting to follow his lead once again in cultivating a more natural, authentic and patient-oriented surgical approach.
