Shanghai, China--(Newsfile Corp. - September 28, 2025) - The Final Jury of "Shining Shanghai" (Jing'an) 2025 International Light Art Open Call concluded on September 17 at Guang Er Warehouse in Jing'an District, Shanghai. Among 20 shortlisted works, the jury selected the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Award winners. As an integral part of the 3rd "Shining Shanghai" Jing'an International Light Art Exhibition and the Jing'an sub-venue of the 2025 Shanghai International Light Festival, all award-winning and finalist works will be showcased on the façade of Shenyuli in Suhewan from September 29 to October 8.
This year's Open Call, themed "Luminescent Roots: Stories of Home", seeks to transform the DNA of local communities into perceptible "languages of light" through projection mapping, building a "readable home of light art" for everyone. The global concept submission phase launched on May 1 and lasted for two months, closing on July 5. In total, 154 works were submitted by 145 artists/teams from 32 countries and regions across 6 continents. More than half of the participating artists/teams have previously won awards at world-class light festivals such as 1 Minute Projection Mapping Competition in Tokyo, iMapp (Romania), and the Berlin Festival of Lights. After careful selection, 20 outstanding works advanced to the final jury stage.
The 2025 Jury Panel was chaired by Teng Junjie, with Jin Jiangbo, Gill Minervini , and Tang Hao serving as vice-chairs. Eleven renowned artists, entrepreneurs, and leading figures in the global light art field-including Joshua Bernard, Mikaël Frascadore, Wang Zhijie, Xiao Hui Wang, and Tango-served as professional jury members. Together, under the supervision of the Supervisory Panel, the jury evaluated the shortlisted works based on four criteria: concept, architectural integration, visual aesthetics, and professional execution, ultimately selecting the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Award winners of the 2025 open call.
According to Chairman Teng Junjie, the open call-rooted in Jing'an but reaching out to the world-continues to deepen the integration of "Art + Technology + City," further expanding Shanghai's global connections. It has attracted outstanding creative teams from across six continents, significantly enhancing both the breadth and quality of international participation while showcasing the vitality of local creators. The event demonstrates the growing professional influence and global appeal of the open call.
At the same time, Tang Hao, CEO of SMG Motion Magic and founder of the open call, remarked: "As the initiator, Motion Magic has remained committed to advancing light art. From small-scale beginnings to today's globally recognized event, Shining Shanghai has embodied this journey. Guided by the principle of "technology-led, dual-engine driven," we harness cutting-edge tools such as Ultra HD, VR, and AR to expand artistic possibilities and enhance visual immersion. At the same time, we emphasize the integration of art with commerce and tourism, adopting a "culture-commerce-tourism-exhibition" model that creates platforms for artists, revitalizes urban spaces, and injects new vitality into city life."
Gill Minervini, former Festival Director of Vivid Sydney, shared her excitement and best wishes:"This year's theme, Luminescent Roots: Stories of Home, is something we can all relate to and I am excited to see the various interpretations and dimensions that this year's artists bring to this universal narrative. My best wishes and congratulations to all of the artists involved and to the organisers of this internationally important event. I can't wait to see Shanghai shine even brighter."
At the conclusion of the jury process, and under the witness of the Supervisory Panel, Chairman Teng Junjie and the Presidium members held a press conference to announce the award results to the media and the public.
