Hericium erinaceus (Lion’s Mane) is an edible mushroom known for its numerous health promoting benefits, including potential neuroprotective and neuroregenerative properties. H. erinaceus contains several bioactive components including polysaccharides, phenolic acids, and terpenoids, such as hericenones and erinacines. Both hericenones and erinacines cross the blood-brain barrier, exerting neuroprotective and cognition-enhancing effects. Human studies indicate supplementation with H. erinaceus improve cognition in older adults with cognitive impairment. Supplementation with H. erinaceus has also been associated with reductions in depression, anxiety and sleep disorder scores.   A study published in Nutrients explored the short and long term effects of supplementation with H. erinaceus in healthy adults using a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, parallel-group study design. Participants consumed placebo or 3 capsules daily (600 mg H. erinaceus per capsule) for 28 days. Cognitive processing speed was increased in participants who consumed one dose of H. erinaceus. Consumption for 28 days was associated with a trend toward lower self-reported scores for stress. This study adds to the growing body of literature supporting the cognitive and mood benefits associated with consumption of functional mushrooms.   In recognition of the benefits of functional mushrooms, cbdMD launched its functional mushroom line through its sister brand, ATRx Labs. We anticipate future additions to the line to offer our customers efficacious products for specific areas that matter to them.   We will continue to share data on the benefits of functional mushrooms and other botanical ingredients as it becomes available.   https://lnkd.in/egPV62F6   #functionalnutrition #functionalmushrooms #innovation #researchanddevelopment

In continued recognition of the month of April being National Stress Awareness Month, we are sharing another study exploring nonpharmaceutical options for stress. Many of those impacted by anxiety find the treatment often comes with side effects that prove to be deterrents to continued use of the medications, including cognitive or sexual dysfunction. Consumers are therefore seeking options that are naturally derived, nonpharmaceutical to avoid the side effects. Botanical-derived solutions are increasing in popularity for their perceived benefits without the detractors commonly associated with pharmaceutical treatment.   Investigators in Boston completed an open label stage of a human clinical trial which investigated the benefits of full spectrum hemp extract on measures of anxiety in adults. The study enrolled fourteen adults with moderate to severe anxiety who were currently being treated for this disorder. Participants consumed full spectrum hemp extract tinctures containing 10 mg CBD and 0.23 mg THC three times daily for four weeks. At the completion of the study participants demonstrated significant reductions in all indices of anxiety relative to their baseline data, with a significant response to treatment occurring as early as one week into the study which was maintained throughout the study (>15% reduction). Study participants did not experience negative side effects related to the test product.   We previously completed a human clinical study that provided 100 mg CBD daily for 90 days to healthy male and female subjects. Female participants who received the test product reported significantly less stress compared to the placebo group. Furthermore, the dose of cannabinoids provided to participants in the study discussed today and our human clinical were significantly lower than previous doses administered in clinical studies which demonstrated efficacy. This data further supports the benefit of cannabinoids for mental health and wellness. We will continue to share more data on the benefits of CBD and other cannabinoids as it is published.   #CBDWellness #CBDBenefits #Research #Cannabinoids https://lnkd.in/dHDkzaTT

April is recognized as National Stress Awareness Month in recognition of the negative impact stress may have on overall health and wellness. The impact of stress on overall health may not always be apparent. It contributes to sleep disruption, headache, increased propensity of illness and changes to your mood. When left untreated stress can lead to health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and mental illness.    Humans are not the only ones who experience stressors that take a toll on overall health. Dogs often experience stress from being alone, kenneling, or traveling in cars. Pet owners have sought treatment options including pharmaceutical interventions, behavioral therapies, or nutraceuticals with varying degrees of success.   A recent study published in the Journal of Animal Science explored the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) for dogs with travel-related anxiety. Dogs were given CBD in capsule form (4 mg/kg) daily for 24 weeks and then tested two hours after administration at weeks 0. 8, 16, and 24. Serum assays and behavioral assessments were performed at each time point to determine if the treatment was efficacious. Traveling in the car elicited a stress response in several measures for both groups including changes in cortisol, heart rate (HR), HR variability, lip licking and yawning. Although the stress response was less prominent by week 24, dogs that received CBD daily exhibited a significantly lesser response to the stressor in some of the measures of stress.   The data from this study corroborates similar studies in human populations. We completed a human clinical in healthy populations which administered 100 mg/CBD daily and explored indices of stress and tension/anxiety over time. Our study determined that 100 mg of CBD resulted in an 11% reduction in stress scores for female subjects and a trend for 19% lower tension/anxiety scores for both male and female subjects over the 90-day study. Although additional studies are always welcome, there is a growing body of literature supporting the positive impact of low dose CBD consumption in dogs and humans.   We will continue to share more data on the benefits of CBD and other cannabinoids as it is published.   #CBDWellness #CBDbenefits #Research #Cannabinoids   https://lnkd.in/euWk7gDm

Modern medicine and lifestyle changes have led to an increasingly longer lifespan for American adults. The population of elderly individuals has also increased, along with demand for functional products to support healthy aging. While it is generally expected that physical ailments increase with age, more evidence has emerged regarding the increasing prevalence of mental aspects of aging, particularly cognitive and memory decline.   Consumers are seeking natural options to support their health and wellness, which has recently been demonstrated by increased interest in functional mushrooms. Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) mushroom is known for its role in promoting overall health, which is attributed to the over seventy bioactive metabolites it produces, including ß-glucans, eracines, and hericenones. Lion’s Mane has also been studied for its antioxidant, anti-senescence, and neuroprotective properties. A recent study in Biology investigated the effects of oral supplementation with Lion’s Mane extract for two months in an aging mouse model. After two months of supplementation with lion’s mane extract, the mice exhibited an altered composition of intestinal bacteria, which resulted in an increase in key genera related to cognition and concurrent decrease in genera associated with inflammation. Further, supplementation with Lion’s Mane positively modulated markers for neurodegeneration by supporting architecture of specific regions of the brain and decreased markers for neuroinflammation in the hippocampus. This study provides support for the benefits associated with consumption of lion’s mane mushroom extract for cognition and also indicates Lion’s Mane may also support gut health. There is a growing body of literature suggesting a connection between gut health and the central nervous system. Studies indicate the type of microbiota in the gut impact memory and cognition. Data indicates that when microbial diversity decreases and incidence of proinflammatory species increases there is a commensurate increase in pervasiveness of cognitive impairment. This study adds additional support to the correlation between gut health and cognitive function.   We launched a line of functional mushroom products last year through our sister brand, ATRx Labs. The Super Mushroom gummy is the first product to be released with a blend of functional mushrooms, including Cordyceps, Lion’s Mane, and Reishi mushrooms with Huperzine A and L-Theanine to support cognition and mood. In recognition of the growing body of literature supporting the benefits of functional mushrooms, we anticipate future additions to the functional mushroom line in ATRx Labs.   We will continue to share data on the benefits of functional mushrooms and other botanical ingredients as it becomes available. #functionalnutrition #functionalmushrooms #innovation #researchanddevelopment https://lnkd.in/e6KKKiHq

An increasing number of Americans suffer from mental health challenges, which is occurring in conjunction with a significant drop in sleep quality and hours of sleep per night. Almost a third of adults in America get less than hours per night of sleep. Research on this subject helped to support an increase in the prevalence of natural alternatives for sleep support.   A recent study of out the University of Northern Colorado investigated the effects of eight weeks of oral consumption of 50 mg of cannabidiol (CBD) in a liquid gelcap on indices of sleep quality. Subject who consumed 50 mg of CBD for eight weeks reported significant improvement in scores on Leeds sleep evaluation questionnaire. Further, when study participants were asked to rate their quality of sleep when they woke after consuming CBD, they reported over 79% improvement compared to a 24.5% improvement in the control group. This data provides further support that regular use of CBD may help to improve the quality of sleep in healthy subjects.   cbdMD is partnering with Whoop to explore the benefits of 100 mg our broad spectrum hemp extract on sleep and recovery in healthy subjects over 90 days. Participants are wearing bands to collect objective biometric data on parameters for recovery and sleep. Study participants are also completing journals to provide insight into their perspective on sleep and recovery metrics during the study. We expect to report the results from the study later this year.   We will continue to share data on the benefits of cannabinoids and other functional ingredients as it becomes available.   #CBDwellness #CBDBenefits #Research #Cannabinoids   https://lnkd.in/ertU4mY6

National Sleep Awareness Month was created in recognition of the significant impact sleep has on health and wellness. Many adults in America do not get enough sleep or consider their sleep to be restful, which creates a sleep deficit. Over time, decrements to sleep could lead to increased illness, decreased productivity, cognitive deficits, and depression.   Several pharmacological options are available for adults who are looking for solutions, however, the significant side effects are often deterrents for long term use. This has led to a proliferation of dietary supplements for sleep support as natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals. Melatonin is one of the most common ingredients found in sleep support supplements. In addition to melatonin, cannabinoid-based products have grown in popularity for sleep support. Cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN) are the cannabinoids most frequently associated with sleep benefits.   Recently, a human study explored the effects of participants’ sleep experience with several different formulations. The formulations were iterations of CBD (broad and full spectrum) alone and in combination with CBN and/or melatonin. Study participants were provided with products for four weeks and surveyed twice weekly regarding the quality of their sleep. All of the treatments led to significant improvement in sleep disturbance scores without any safety concerns. These data indicate low doses of CBD (15 mg) may help to support restful sleep. cbdMD is partnering with Whoop to study the effects of 100 mg CBD intake daily over 90 days on indices related to recovery and sleep. We provided study participants with the same dose of CBD found to be efficacious on indices of pain and some mood parameters in our human clinical study. Unlike the observational study reviewed above, cbdMD is using biometric monitoring to corroborate survey data with daily measurements of metrics for recovery and sleep. We anticipate reporting on data from this study later in the year.   We will continue to share studies on the benefits of cannabinoids as they are published.   #CBDwellness #CBDbenefits #Research #Cannabinoids #Sleepsupport    https://lnkd.in/g-MMJ3w3

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most consumed and studied cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. As more data becomes available on areas which CBD may provide positive benefits like inflammation, well-being, daily stress relief, or sleep there is a corresponding uptick in consumer demand. Until recently, little data has been available on how much CBD you should consume to feel these benefits and what levels are safe, leaving consumers left with questions about how much CBD they should take and when.   A review in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology examined safety data from both human clinical and animal toxicology studies. The takeaway was healthy adults (except for anyone trying to conceive or are currently pregnant or lactating) could safely consume up to 160 mg of CBD per day. cbdMD completed extensive safety studies in rodents, which were referenced in this review paper and form the basis for our current formulas and conditions for use on our products. Our data supports the consumption of one milligram of CBD per pound of body weight.   cbdMD also completed a clinical study in healthy humans to explore potential benefits of daily CBD intake. Daily intake of 100 mg of CBD significantly reduced pain scores in male and female subjects and stress indices for female subjects. We expect the results of our study to be published later this year. Based on the work we have completed to determine how much CBD our customers should take and that those levels are safe, we believe that like multivitamins and botanical supplements, CBD works best when it is consumed daily (1 mg/pound) and starts to provide noticeable effects in a few weeks. We will continue to share as more studies on the safety of cannabidiol and other cannabinoids are published.   #cbdwellness #cbdbenefits #cbdsafety #research #cannabinoids https://lnkd.in/eGJKDy3A

Veterinarians and pet owners are looking to cannabinoid products for pets’ health and wellness, but most are unsure of how much to use and when they should be administered. The first step in that process is understanding how much is safe for pets. The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) is a nonprofit trade association organized to promote health and well-being of companion animals and horses who are given animal supplements while also protecting and enhancing the quality of the animal health supplement industry. NASC offers a Quality Program which audits facilities and ensures products and labels comply with their quality requirements. cbdMD is a member of NASC and maintains annual certification for our #PawCBD product line.   This week, NASC announced the publication of their safety study in dogs which explored oral dosing of different cannabinoids (CBD; CBD+CBG; CBD+CBDA) at 5 mg/kg for 90 days in a repeat dose study. All of the animals completed the study without clinically relevant changes in safety-related endpoints, meaning each of the cannabinoids tested was safe for the dogs to consume over the study duration.   cbdMD completed a clinical study in dogs at Colorado State University in 2023. Dogs in our study consumed 5 mg/kg of our broad spectrum hemp extract daily for 45 days with no clinically relevant changes in safety-related endpoints, like the NASC study. We also explored the efficacy of our broad spectrum hemp extract and found behavior improved, activity increased, pain severity and pain interference scores improved with consumption of our products. We expect results of our study to be published some time in 2024. We will continue to share as more studies on safety and efficacy of cannabinoids for pets are published. #cannabinoids #research #pethealth #cbdwellness https://lnkd.in/ekF4d8QH

Interest in functional mushrooms has surged in the last few years. This is largely due to a growing body of research and data to support their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The most studied mushrooms include but are not limited to Lion’s mane, Reishi, Maitake, Chaga, Shiitake, Oyster, Turkey Tail, Wood Ear, and White Button. These species of mushrooms contain high levels of bioactive compounds such as ergosterols, b-glucan, vitamins, terpenoids, ergothioneine, erinacines, and hericenones which are all known to support a variety of functions including digestive health, brain health, and mood. The study published in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews systematically reviewed the available literature for studies related to cognitive benefits of functional mushrooms for humans. Epidemiological data suggests a link between mushroom intake and cognitive support, however, the studies in human populations need to be powered higher and collect biochemical data. The data suggests there may be a dose-response effect over time for Lion’s Mane mushroom and cognitive support. This review identified some benefits of functional mushrooms in combination with a healthy lifestyle in the subset of literature reviewed. It also indicates more research is needed to truly understand how the consumption of each species of mushroom may benefit human health. Animal studies have provided support for antidepressant and cognitive benefits following consumption of mushroom bioactives. The data from animal studies was incredibly informative during the formulation of our functional mushroom capsules, the Platinum Mushroom Capsules, recently nominated for WholeFoods Magazine’s 2024 Natural Choice Awards. We will continue to provide more information on the benefits of functional mushrooms and their bioactive ingredients as it becomes available. https://lnkd.in/eGxKRKFp #functionalnutrition #functionalmushrooms #innovation #researchanddevelopment
