Invest in something you can feel good about

In the last 3 years alone, assets invested in sustainable funds and ETFs have doubled. It’s a testament to the fact that companies can have a positive impact as well as make a profit.

ESG stands for environmental, social and governance. It refers to three non-traditional performance attributes that measures the sustainability and societal impact of a business. "Given the growth of sustainability challenges globally, ESG factors are now table stakes for consideration when investing, and no longer an optional investment strategy," says Director of Responsible Investment, Nalini Feuilloley.

There are a couple options available to include ESG investments in your portfolio. You can work with an investment professional or you can do it yourself through an online self-directed account.

ESG Options

"There’s lots of research that shows how incorporating ESG factors, along side traditional financial metrics in portfolio analysis, can have a positive impact on performance," says Senior Product Manager, Erin Allen.

When you work with an investment professional you get access to ESG solutions, like the newly launched BMO Sustainable Portfolios. They’re a new suite of portfolios that invest in companies committed to positive ESG outcomes. Further, they’re built for investors who want to drive outcomes while contributing to a better world.

If you are looking to add ESG ETFs to your self-directed portfolio, BMO has expanded the range of ESG ETFs including the BMO Balanced ESG ETF (ZESG) and are available through any online brokers.

The first of its kind in Canada, the BMO Balanced ESG ETF focuses on responsible investing that incorporates environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors.

"Most companies view ESG objectives as opportunities to positively impact shareholder value. They also evaluate ESG risks and work towards mitigating them to avoid any negative impact to company value," says Senior Product Manager, Danielle Neziol.
