US GDP Growth Ugraded to 3.4% in Q4
The US economy expanded an annualized 3.4% in Q4 2023, slightly above the 3.2% previously reported, supported by consumer spending and non-residential business investments, according to the final estimate. Also, the University of Michigan consumer sentiment was revised sharply up to 79.4 in March, hitting the highest level since July 2021, from a preliminary reading of 76.5.
Gold Hits New Record High
Gold advanced past $2,200 an ounce on Thursday, hovering at all-time highs and looking to record its biggest monthly gain of around 8.5% since November 2022, buoyed by increased expectations of monetary easing and growing geopolitical tensions. Although the US inflation has proved to be stickier than anticipated, the Fed preserved its guidance for three interest cuts this year. The bets on Fed interest rate reduction in June have risen to 64%, which in turn boosted the appeal of non-yielding assets. For further clues about the Fed's future decisions investors will be eyeing the US PCE price index report due on on Friday. Meanwhile, gold as a hedge against geopolitical instability remained underpinned by war in Ukraine and Middle East.

S&P 500 Closes at Fresh Record
Stock in the US closed mixed on the last trading day of Q1, just ahead of the Easter break. The S&P 500 added 0.1%, hitting new high, the Dow Jones gained 47 points, while the Nasdaq ended 0.1% lower, as investors awaited the release of the Fed's preferred inflation measure and Chair Jerome Powell's comments the following day. Despite a weak opening, stocks are poised to end the quarter on a strong note, having added $4 trillion to US equity values, buoyed by recent remarks from Fed officials suggesting that policymakers will not hastily lower interest rates. On the corporate front, luxury retailer RH surged 17.1% after unveiling a robust outlook for demand and revenue growth. In contrast, Reddit saw a 14.9% decline after its CEO and COO disclosed selling over 1 million shares in total. For the quarter, the S&P 500 gained 10.2%, marking its best first-quarter gain since 2019. The Dow Jones added 5.6%, its strongest first-quarter performance since 2021, while the Nasdaq climbed 8.6%

Oil Advances for Third Month
WTI crude futures rose above $82 per barrel on Thursday, marking a third consecutive monthly increase fueled by optimism around continued production cuts by the OPEC+ alliance. Despite growing geopolitical tensions that could disrupt supply, OPEC+ is expected to maintain current oil output policies at their meeting next Wednesday. Meanwhile, the most recent report from the EIA showed a surprise rise in US crude oil and gasoline inventories due to higher crude imports and weak gasoline demand. While the inventory build was less than anticipated by the API, it remained below typical seasonal patterns. Additionally, the rise in US refinery utilization rates further supported prices.

US Pending Home Sales Rebound as Expected
Pending home sales in the United States rose by 1.6% from the previous month in February of 2024, trimming the 4.9% drop in the previous month and loosely meeting market expectations of a 1.5% advance. Pending home sales rose by 1.1% in the South and soared by 10.6% in the Midwest, offsetting the 6.5% slide in the West and a 0.3% drop in the Northeast. "While modest sales growth might not stir excitement, it shows slow and steady progress from the lows of late last year," said NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. "Ongoing job gains are clearly increasing demand along with more inventory."
