A Voice From Prison is an organization that advocates for criminal justice reform and constitutional rights. Started by Tyler King in 2021 as a way to share his own experiences as an incarcerated individual, A Voice From Prison has expanded to become a registered nonprofit organization.
Life in prison is often vastly different from what it appears to be in popular culture. By creating this blog, A Voice From Prison hopes to provide space for people to talk about the reality of life behind bars and to shine a light on the issues at hand. As an organization, A Voice From Prison wants to advocate for policy change and provide resources for people who are, or have been, involved in the criminal justice system.
What happens when our justice system doesn’t get it right?
Some Americans break the law without ever being aware. Did you know using a fake name on social media could get you arrested, or that sharing your password to a subscription service is considered a federal crime? Crime prevention shouldn’t mean targeting innocent or disadvantaged people. The US constitution establishes the separation of powers, but the system of checks and balances isn’t what it should be.
In 2021, 161 prisoners were exonerated for crimes they did not commit. Official misconduct was found to have occurred in more than 63% of these cases. In 2020, less than 50% of all reported homicides led to an arrest.According to a recent study on prisoner recidivism by the Bureau of Justice Statistics “an estimated 68% of released prisoners were arrested within 3 years, 79% within 6 years, and 83% within 9 years.” The US criminal justice system clearly isn’t working.Maintaining our Constitutional rights is a big deal – by the time you cross paths with the criminal justice system, it is already too late. The US Justice Department oversees prosecution of crimes, how criminal laws are interpreted, authority over convicted individuals in the BOP, and even who receives pardons. With more than 2 million people currently behind bars, the US has the highest per capita incarceration rate in the world.
