How does Blockchain in Healthcare Work?

A Blockchain network is used to store and share data. Within the healthcare ecosystem, this patient data moves between hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, pharmacy corporations, clinicians, and anyone else responsible for the patient’s wellbeing at any stage of their healthcare journey.
Ultimately, the Blockchain puts the patient at the center of the healthcare ecosystem, while improving health data security, transparency, privacy, and interoperability.
The benefits of Blockchain in healthcare are infinite, starting by making electronic medical records more efficient, secure, and disintermediated. Blockchain technology can even create new Health Information Exchange (HIE) models to replace antiqued existing systems entirely.

The Implementation Of Blockchain In Healthcare Why ICB?

They say the best things in life are free, and ICB’s Blockchain services for healthcare are one of them.

Exclusive Blockchain

ICB has its own exclusive Blockchain and network within MICB, and we recently established the framework needed to bring our Blockchain-based healthcare services to life.

Seamless Peer-to-Peer Transactions

Enabling decentralized P2P exchange or sharing of information, data, or assets between peers without involving any intermediaries

Higher Quality Healthcare

The implementation of Blockchain in healthcare has the power to put data into the hands of its rightful owner: The patient. Together, we can give patients more control and influence over their own wellbeing.

Worldwide Access

Blockchain-based healthcare ends the paper trail by enabling safe, secure access to patient and project data from anywhere in the world. No matter where a patient is treated, their health records will be available, accessible, and capable of being validated through a distributed ledger.

Transparency & Security

The Blockchain has already had a remarkable impact on multiple sectors, and we believe healthcare should be next in line – empowering medical professionals to resolve issues faster and with more efficiency and accuracy than ever before.
By introducing Blockchain in healthcare, patients’ electronic health records will be more transparent and secure. The Blockchain guarantees a valid and fully auditable ledger of transactions, while identifying potential mistakes and preserving the exchange of patient data.

Streamlining Raw Healthcare Data

With Blockchain technology, you can aggregate and consolidate all information stemming from medical devices, labs, and even social media among countless other sources to create raw data that can scale into big data with time. This data is the key that keeps the Blockchain-based healthcare system in motion.

Blockchain Applications in Healthcare
Essentially, Blockchain applications in healthcare can be classified into three main categories, which we will explore in more detail below.

1: Healthcare Data Management

Technology improves every single day, and over the past few decades, we have seen extraordinary developments in electronic health-related data, cloud healthcare data storage, and patient data privacy protection regulations.
Now, new health data management opportunities are emerging at every turn, while giving patients the newfound convenience of being able to access and share their health data with the people and professionals that matter the most.
Every hospital, medical center, and healthcare facility would agree that data security, storage, and transaction transparency are crucial – as is the ability to solve critical issues swiftly and accurately. When Blockchain becomes a part of the healthcare lifecycle, this is guaranteed – and here’s how it works.
The below three steps pulse at the core of the Blockchain-based healthcare process. All patient data is securely store in the cloud to ensure easy and safe distribution, uncompromised privacy, and customized access control.
Step 1: Each patient-doctor interaction generates primary data, comprising healthcare history and medical complaints among other physiological information.
Step 2: Using the primary data, an EHR is created for the patient, which scales with time as more data is generated through the likes of medical imaging, drug history, nursing care, and beyond.
Step 3: The patient maintains full ownership over their sensitive EHR and all data within it. New practitioners and specialists assigned to their medical journey may only access this data with their express consent and permission.

2: Supply Chain Management

Blockchain technology is on the brink of transforming healthcare as we know it – for the better – forever. By establishing a trusted network of authentic healthcare professionals and administrators, we can protect patients from the wrath of dishonest and potentially fraudulent industry players. From demand forecasting to data provenance, fraud prevention, and more, Blockchain technology is proving itself to be a saving grace in healthcare supply chain management. Here’s how it works.
Step 1: Each time a new medicine or form of healthcare is created, so too is a block on the blockchain. This includes patent protection and the long clinical trial process, and all information is recorded in the digital ledger as a transaction.
Step 2: In the wake of a successful clinical trial, the patent is sent to the manufacturing plant for prototype testing and mass production. Each product carries its own unique identity, which is integrated with another transaction (or block) on the Blockchain, accompanied by all relevant information.
Step 3: Once mass production and packaging are complete, the medicine is gathered in a warehouse pending distribution. All important information is registered on the Blockchain, including time, lot number, bar code, and expiry date.
Step 4: All transportation information is also recorded on the Blockchain, including time out from one warehouse (IN) to another, the mode of transportation, and the authorized agent among other imperative data.
Step 5: When it comes to supplying drugs and medical supplies to healthcare providers and retailors, a third-party distribution network is normally responsible. In this case, each third party has a warehouse (OUT), to which all distribution endpoints are linked. A separate transaction is also added to the Blockchain.
Step 6: Care providers, such as hospitals or clinics, must provide certain information to authenticate each product while curbing counterfeiting. This information includes the batch number, lot number, product owner, and expiry date, all of which are also recorded on the Blockchain. Retailers are expected to perform the same actions.
Step 8: The Blockchain supply chain keeps information transparent at all times for verification purposes to potential buyers. Patients are encouraged to determine authenticity at each leg of the process.

3: Clinical Trials

Clinical trials result in the creation of vast networks that involve numerous parties, sites, and a continuous flow of information, highly confidential clinical research, and sensitive patient data. Collaboration is crucial among stakeholders, from regulatory bodies to pharmaceutical companies, clinical sites, and, of course, the test subjects themselves. All of this information is crucial when it comes to the approval of new drugs, instruments, and medical or surgical treatments to be tested on human participants of the trial.
Anything can change at any moment during a clinical trial, which is why it’s important to track everything that happens at every stage of the process. And Blockchain technology lets you do just that. From content to people to the time of the modification, all historical data is created and kept trackable for the convenience of everyone involved.
Multiple copies are stored and shared across various pre-determined stakeholders’ computer systems for safekeeping. During the trial, data is collected from the subject by the investigator at a fixed period, from vital signs to symptom fluctuations, side effects, and any complications caused by the relevant study drug.
Here’s how the process unfolds:
Step 1: Data is created from disparate sources, including smart devices and clinical trial sites
Step 2: The data is collected.
Step 3: The data is processed and converted into various formats
Step 4: The data is further analyzed by various organizations using their preferred method and format.
Step 5: Data report results are sent to the relevant regulatory authorities.

The Internet of Medical Things

Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) systems play a crucial role in the development of medical and health information ecosystems. IoMT technology makes it possible for crucial data to be shared over the internet, in real-time, from medical equipment such as heart monitors, body scanners, and wearable devices.
For example, medical professionals can use the IoMT paradigm to capture an image, identify suspicious or malignant cells, and share this information with anyone who has been granted access to the data.
The patient is the source of all of this data, and medical IoMT devices are normally attached to (or close to) the patient’s body to produce data. This generated data is then stored through blocks or on the cloud. Through the power of decentralized AI, the Blockchain can create intelligent virtual agents where security is priority number one.
