In 2011, KSP pledged to the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2030 Commitment, setting an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions in the built environment. Today, we are proud to be one of 19 firms of 65,000 in the nation that achieved that goal. One example of our commitment is the Silvio J. Mollo Federal Building located in New York City. A unique opportunity within the GSA Design Excellence Program, the project aims to re-position the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. By maintaining the existing structure and re-imagining in a high-performance façade, the project is not only the lowest embodied carbon building in the GSA portfolio, but also designed to accommodate USAO Divisions currently leasing space offsite. The project aims to reposition the building as a symbol of justice and proves that sustainability, performance and identity can go hand in hand. Here's how: All-Electric: Our building is designed to run entirely on electricity and is positioned for New York City’s clean grid transformation plan. Energy Efficiency: By implementing General Services Administration green power purchasing, we have slashed our energy demand by a staggering 74%, effectively making the building net-zero. Adaptive Reuse: By repurposing the existing structure and materials, we have implemented high-performance building façade and systems to reduce the building’s consumption by 76%, minimizing waste and environmental impact. Low Embodied Carbon Materials: We focused on low embodied carbon materials for the interior, revealing the waffle concrete slab, and re-centering the building around a stunning Alex Katz mural. Team Client: GSA General Contractor: Turner Construction Company Lighting Design: George Sexton Associates Structural Engineering: Thornton Tomasetti Civil Engineering: Langan Engineering & Environmental Services Mechanical Engineering, Plumbing: WSP Fire & Life Safety: Jensen Hughes Vertical Transportation: VDA Elevator and Escalator Consulting Cost Estimator: Toscano Clements Taylor Cost Consultants Acoustic Design Audio Visual: Threshold Acoustics Sustainability: Atelier Ten Interior Design Programming: Schiller Projects Specifications: Architech

Gabriel Wilcox, Director of Sustainability at KSP, was recently featured on the MAREDI Design podcast, an internationally recognized studio focused on regenerative design. In episode nine, "The Imperative of Nature in Design," Gabriel shares insights on rebuilding the relationship between nature, us, and our buildings. "We started to extract ourselves from nature. Our modern society today is very extractive. We spend majority of our lives indoors, in vehicles and trains. That connection is weakening. We once had a very strong, innate connection to the natural world and its systems, and now it is fleeting. That is something we have designed into our world today and our lives, but it doesn't mean we can't design ourselves out of it." — Gabriel Wilcox, Director of Sustainable Design, Krueck Sexton Partners Mother Nature Rules - The Imperative of Nature in Design with Gabriel Wilcox https://lnkd.in/gbv4BeNX

Last month, Partner Juan Villafane, AIA, LEED, featured Boston's 125 High Fitness Center at AIA Chicago DETAILS Entrez, with a meticulous exploration of a selected detail from the project. The Entrez series is focused on how we experience the entrance of a building. Juan showcased how the Fitness Center's design transforms the atrium into a dynamic space, integrated within Boston's Financial District. From the illumination of the golf simulator area to the immersive tunnel of light within the stair structure, every element was crafted to evoke a sense of movement and engagement.
