This symposium will encourage a robust conversation around two words with much currency in the Academy, “impact” and “usefulness” as they apply to the influence of management research on government policy and regulation specifically, and broader society more generally. The symposium builds upon growing recognition within the Academy that our research should impact and matter to wider interests beyond a small community of like-minded scholars. Scholarly impact has attracted much debate and increased research. Yet, almost all the research has used one common operational and conceptual definition of impact: number of citations. The focus of impact has also been internal stakeholders (i.e. other Academy members and students). In response to the Academy’s strategic objective on professional impact, the panel will examine expanding scholarly impact and usefulness of research for external stakeholders outside the Academy, specifically policymakers, regulators, and society at large.

I just returned today from speaking at sessions at the Astana Economic Forum and Global Risk Expo in Astana, Kazakhstan. I spoke on two topics, Global Cybersecurity and Governance and Financial Risk. Astana is really a beautiful city only constructed within the last 9 years when President Nazarbayev moved the Capital from Almaty to Astana. The hosts were very hospitable and professional. There were over 13,000 delegates from over 150 countries attending.

    Please see: http://astanaforum.org/2014/en/events/international-expo-conference-global-risk-expo-2

The Astana Forum was sponsored and organized by the Eurasian Club of Economic Scientists – an organization whose Members include Tony Blair, Alan Greenspan, Bill Clinton and over 20 Nobel Laureates as well as other world leaders. Many of the Laureates were participants at the 2014 Astana Forum.

    "One World For Life"

The global event also unveiled a new world disaster paradigm for the nations of the world called “One World for Life” The not for profit organization was created by the Hon. Curt Weldon. Congressman Curt Weldon (1987-2007) also created and Chaired the Congressional Fire Safety Caucus and Institute in 1988, Chaired the Military R&D Sub-Committee and served as Vice Chairman of the House Homeland Security and Armed Services Committees and is a former Volunteer Fire Chief. One World for Life is a Strategic Operational Organization that includes every nation and is much needed. A key aspect of One World for Life is sharing information, protocols, and lessons learned from global emergencies and disasters and identifying and using emerging technologies to help First Responders. As we enter a new technological era, such technologies have the ability to help predict, prevent and minimize the extent of disasters. More to come on One World For Life soon!

Cybersecurity: Big Threats of Global World

According to the Ministry of Communications and mass media reports, cyberattacks are becoming more and more sophisticated. In 2012, total losses due to cyberattacks totaled more than $2 billion. Meanwhile, all economic sectors are increasingly dependent on information and communication technologies: analysts expect that billions of new devices will be connected to telecommunication networks. We must develop fundamentally new principles and strategies of protection.

Have people become more vulnerable in the new wired world? How can an economy reduce losses from cybercriminals? What kinds of technological protections exist? Are there are any alternatives to traditional antivirus software? What is the role of international cooperation in cybersecurity? What cybersecurity strategy is the most suitable for Russia?

ABOUT THE #CYBERAVENGERS We are a group of salty and experienced professionals who have decided to work together to help our country by defeating cybercrime and slowing down nefarious actors operating in cyberspace seeking to exploit whatever their tapping fingers can get a hold of. How? We do this by raising our collective voices on issues critical importance so that we can keep this great country in the lead – both economically and technologically – and to keep it safe and secure. All the issues are intertwined and more complex than ever, which is why we have differing backgrounds but have a common cause. We complement each other, we challenge each other, and we educate each other. What do we get out of writing articles like this? Nada. Goose egg. We are friends. We are patriots. And we are not satisfied to sit around and do nothing. We want to keep this nation and its data safe and secure.
