In metals news, gold was stuck below $1,200 an ounce as strong US housing data stoked expectations the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates soon. Silver stockpiles in China surged as the country's slowing economic growth weakened demand for the precious metal.
In currencies, the US dollar fell against most other major currencies while the Euro rose on waning fears of a Greek default.
